filed under around town, snacks, something new

i don’t suppose it would surprise you that i signed up to the friends of krispy kreme mailing list. every now and again they send me some junk email telling me about a new limited edition doughnut. this month it is the caramel crunch doughnut.

i found myself in the city again today, due to my mobile phone jumping out of my bag while we were at david jones yesterday; someone nicely handed it in at the cashier’s desk. of course had they decided to take the phone and ring up a great whopping bill, they would have discovered that i had all of $2.70 credits left. so, bah, there was no reason for me to upgrade to a shiny new phone with a colour screen and a camera. anyway, it’s not like i have a spare $500 lying around.

fortunately, this afternoon i had a spare $8.80, which is what four krispy kreme doughnuts — including a caramel crunch doughnut — cost. and suddenly there i was at the store, trying to wrestle the urban warrior pram up to the counter.

i’m not a fan of caramel, but i thought it was necessary to have one for research and documentation purposes. so. this is a yeasty doughnut filled with rather less caramel kreme than you’d hope for even if you weren’t a fan of caramel. the top is glazed with chocolate, and then sprinkled with crunchy bits. it was not as sweet as other kk doughnuts i’ve had (i usually go for the sugar glazed variety: the other three i got today were glazed sour cream, glazed devil’s food and glazed blueberry), and in fact it was a pleasant doughnut experience that i would repeat, especially with a cup of unsweetened black tea. perhaps next time i will try not to crumb all over my desk.

in short, it was rather like eating a golden gaytime, in doughnut form.

which reminds me, you can now get a tim tam cornetto, but having only seen billboards for this new product, i can only imagine that it would be somewhat less good than a tim tam, and possibly a little better than a regular cornetto. has anyone encountered one?

when i read “it’s not like a have a spare $500 lying around,” my head thought: that BABY is worth at least twice that.

    uhm.

also, having now finished reading the whole post, my eyes are glazed over, all sugary-like.

i need toast, and jam. sweet, sweet raspberry-peach-champagne jam.

OMG, those are crazy prices you’re paying for donuts.

    $8.80 for 4 donuts?!? That’s US$6.64.

Um, I pay like $0.60 a donut. The most expensive donuts run like $1.10.

Not to mention, if you’re buying Krispy Krak, those donuts are TIIINY.

    =(

and, i’m scared to ask, but what is golden gaytime? @_@

I have this kind of love-hate relationship with krispy kreme donuts. One, I can’t help but have random cravings of them, where I eat eat eat them. Then I feel sick.

You have excellent restraint, because I always end up getting like two dozen packs under the guise of sharing them around with family and friends.

I must admit I squirmed in my seat when you described the caramel donut, but then was slightly relieved that it wasn’t too sweet, for I’d like to try it.

    AAAAAAhahahaha
i wanted to say something about the golden gaytime but i thought i should just let it go already, because maybe it is funny to no one but me.
however, CLEARLY it is troubling to other people also. ho ho.

Like the memories they induce, Golden Gaytimes are definitely from a lifetime ago… they still generate much childish mirth. I’ve bought them for passengers on holiday pit-stops just so I can ask people if they “want a gay time”.

Haven’t tried Tim Tam cornettos. I concur. This whole product diversification thing is getting ridiculous!

hikaru: HAHAHA. according to the company website, “golden gaytime is a unique flavour combination of toffee flavoured ice cream dipped in fine chocolate and crunchy biscuit pieces”. it is actually good for an ice cream on a stick. for a while there was also cappuccino gaytime.

re: the price of donuts. ordinary local donuts are much more affordable than the fancy american stuff, probably 30c to 50c for a plain cinnamon cake donut, but these are actually about half the size of krispy kremes. you can get larger yeast donuts, usually iced with chocolate, strawberry, caramel or pineapple icing… i have no idea how much these cost because i never get them. jam donuts, if labelled “beignet” and sold at a fancy store can also cost upwards of $2.50. i very rarely get donuts in general. the last was back in january.

usually a whole kk doughnut is too much for me — but sometimes i don’t let that stop me eating the whole thing — so i’m intrigued by the monstrous size of the donuts in your area.

saffron: hmm. two dozen is a lot of doughnuts. even one dozen seems like too many. but then i don’t have that many family and/or friends to hand them out to. having said that (because i know nellie will) i did offer a large crumb of the glazed sour cream doughnut to the child as we sat in the park, but she was more intent on eating the dried leaf which she picked up off the ground.

nellicent: oh yes, please do say something about the golden gaytime.

augustusgloop: hello! i am pleased to see you here. the tim tam cornetto is ridiculous, but i suspect i will have one anyway, when it crosses my path. just for research purposes, you understand. after all, i gave the melted butter twisties puffs a go. why o why did i keep eating until i hit the bottom ofthe bag?? :(

would u believe i had a krispy kreme donut this morning? (five minutes ago, really.) lemon creme filled. it was that, or a choco cake one — last ones. someone in the dep’t. brought five dozen.

you’d think that a lot, but we have 70 people, lol.

it wasn’t good at all, but it was free, and i didn’t have bfast yet.

given the (i assume) standard size of a kk glazed donut, the avg. u.s. donut is easily 2.5 times the mass, if only 50% wider in diameter. kk donuts are like anorexic. and overly sweet.

i bet that’s the first time a deep fried, sugar coated anything has been likened to anorexia… =D
