JUICE MAGAZINE
is a monthly 132-page full colour pop culture/entertainment magazine. I started out as associate art director on this magazine and assisted in its design for a couple of years, biding my time. After ascension to art directorship in September 97 I maintained the existing design for a few issues, and then in collaboration with Ben (trusty sidekick-in-design and not just an airhead designer) launched the Future2000 look, based around Eurostile, cyan and tetris. These were happy times, although fraught with the inevitable struggle between art and commerce (and the editorial department) over how visually literate the readers are.
POSTSCRIPT After I left, the art department was given orders to revert the design of the magazine to what it had been pre-Future2000. I felt like a paper cutout in a Terry Gilliam-Monty Python animated sequence, where a giant eraser comes out of the sky and scrubs me off the face of the earth. Ah well. Them's the breaks. |
