filed under around town, kid, lunch

nice pear. today, an adventure: the sydney sandwich social whereby sandwiches are made and halved and swapped and eaten.

at ten-thirty, as, all casual-like, i sliced bread, cheese and pear, what the second processor in my head was thinking was, well, i suppose i could make a sandwich, and if all goes well, i’ll be ready to leave the house at eleven-thirty, with a sandwich and a baby. and then it happened! hence, my new plan will be to not make plans, and to let the second processor take care of things.

because then we were on the bus into the city, the magic bus that has a space for a pram, and takes you all the way to the botanical gardens (or the art gallery, if you are that way inclined). and we were walking around under the hot hot sun, looking for a small group of people with large sandwiches. and we were finding them at last, and sitting down in the shade of a tree, and chasing birds and eating twigs and leaves of the ground.

this is the sandwich i made:

pear, pesto and parmesan on walnut bread. last night, when i described the idea to my sister, she paused and thought about it, then said, “unexpected. and tasty.” and then, “does it have to be an alliterative sandwich?” why, no. but they came together all sweet, salty and faintly green.

in the end there were more sandwiches than people, and more cookies and muffins too, and quite a bit of fun for a baby who hadn’t slept in about five hours.

and now i am home, with a baby in bed, and a cup of tea and a delicious apple-streusel muffin, and the saturday review section of movies i will not get to see, not for a very long time, not until they come out on DVD, maybe.

thanks to saffron for the picture of my sandwich, and augustus gloop for the muffins, and to both for bringing all the sandwiches together.

darn you sue. you always beat me to everything. but yes, as the other half of the tasting committee, the sandwich was a wonderful mix of savoury and sweet, one that I’ve always enjoyed in salads and never thought to make into a sandwich. (and also your baby is a real cutie 🙂 )

thank you, ladies. i didn’t realise my meagre sandwich half made it into so many mouths. i should have thrown my half your way too.

sue: your sandwich was yummy! those char-grilled veggies! that heavenly goat curd! note to self: procure some more goat curd.

sarah: you know, any of your favourite salads can be made into a sandwich by whacking it between two bits of bread. 🙂

saffron: or we could do both!

cc, you know how that taro gomi book “spring is here” makes you cry at the end? your story made me smile, it is a good one, as stories go; it is a good one, as days go. today, alas, after weeks of sunny blue, it is kind of grey here, and there is no baby, but the sandwich, now THAT is achievable.

Just so you know, the goats curd was gotten at the Orange Grove markets which is down Darling St across Victoria Road and closer to Leichhardt. Its really good and there are heaps of samples.

AND! There is a lady there who sells all manner of Malaysian curries so you can get roti chanai and rendang for breakfast! Plus that weird pulut thing with hot floss in it.

AND! A nice green park for baby to roam.

kinda lame but first thing that came to mind was triple P , interesting combi for your walnut bread (:

i had a blackberry and walnut bread from surry hills’ bourke street bakery, it was a yummy combination and it had a nice smokey taste to it

sue, did you say malaysian? i’ve been craving for some food from home .. slap me with some rendang anytime!

sue: thanks for the headzup. i drove (was driven, actually) past a couple weeks ago, and it did indeed look festive.

tian: you taunt me with your tales of the bourke street bakery. i know there’s a new branch on broadway that is just a busride away, but i haven’t been motivated enough yet. yes! despite the chocolate tart with my name on it!

AG: oh i am pleased the PPP sandwich is spreading its wings!
